The New Haven Science Fair is particularly special to Why Science because we share New Haven Public Schools commitment to improving STEM education, which is:

  • Getting students excited about learning science using a hands-on approach
  • Increasing student development in critical thinking and communications
  • Increasing the number of students studying STEM subjects in high school, and then college
  • Promoting scientific literacy

Igniting a passion for STEM education gives our young people the tools they will need to think, be globally competitive, intelligently participate in the political process and provide solutions for the survival of mankind – all essential reasons for why cultivating science education is important. Businesses, universities, associations, foundations, students, parents and private citizens have partnered with the New Haven Public schools to make this year’s event a success; and they need your help. Students in pre-K through 12th grade need volunteers to assist with science projects by:

  • Mentoring in the classroom for 1 – 1.5 hours from now through May
  • Helping classrooms brainstorm ideas, research and identify appropriate projects
  • Assisting families with experiments at the Family Science Nights.

Interested volunteers should visit www.nhsciencefair.org.  Click on the “For Mentors” tab, located in primary navigation bar and fill out the “Application for Mentors.”  Completing this brief application ensures that you are properly matched using availability, location, and discipline criteria.

The New Haven Science Fair has come a long way since it’s humble beginnings in 1995.  Last year more than 8000 New Haven students from 43 schools participated; over 160 volunteers participated as mentors and judges.  With your help, the district could increase these numbers. Why Science would like to congratulate the 2015 winners of the New Haven Science Fair and we extend best wishes to the 2016 participants. For more information visit nhsciencefair.org.
