We are very happy to be supporting a great cause that has been put together by our dear friend Gwen Samuel and her colleagues at the CT Parents Union called “Tis The Season To Be Reading“. In addition we are very happy to share with you that Why Science will also be an active participant in some aspects of the programming for this year’s event.
December 16, 2011: Governor Proclaims “Tis The Season To Be Reading” day which encourages communities and schools across the state to host activities that promote early literacy/reading throughout the holiday season and beyond. An emphasis is placed on events for vulnerable populations that comprise the achievement gap (i.e. shelters, transitional homes, foster homes, low-income communities and highly populated communities of color)
Last year’s drive was a major success and the event managed to connect with 700 children and families, many of whom were from low income homes. This year the goal is to connect with at least 1,000 children and families through a variety of outreach methods and to provide these children, many of whom live in our hardest to reach communities with some added motivation to encourage reading/literacy throughout the holiday season and beyond.
Of course we all recognize the enormous hardships so many of our citizens are facing this year and that means your support is more critical than ever. Over the coming weeks and months we will be communicating regularly regarding this event, but we are asking that you please consider making a donation to help support what promises to be a very meaningful event that can have a real impact on those who are most vulnerable.
Here is a link that the CT Parents Union has put together in order to help streamline the donation efforts:
Also, please feel free to share this information with anyone else whom you believe might be interested in making a contribution.
