We recently came across a great article in eSchool News, Ten ways schools are using social media effectively, which we are now happy to share with our readers on the Why Science Blog.

Given that we are a STEM learning technology education company we make a pretty big effort to stay relevant in terms of what is happening online so social media has become a part of our mix – maybe not quite at the level of being in our “DNA”, but social media is an area that we pay attention to and are also active on (here we are on Twitter and Facebook).

In reading the eSchool News article it was really great to see that many other educators were also finding real world benefits to social media.

While the list they put together speaks for itself, in particular we were impressed with how some educators are really embracing social media as an effective communication tool, allowing educators the opportunity to better communicate with students, parents and fellow educators. It was also very great to see how a number of educators are also utilizing online tools to help enhance the overall classroom feel in very technology forward way including utilizing things like “digital lockers”.

There are a number of benefits for bringing technology into the classroom including the ability to potentially enhance the learning process and to more effectively communicate which again, the eSchool News article does a great job with.

One added benefit of featuring social media technology in the classroom is that beyond the communication aspects that some of these services offer, by showcasing some of these technologies in the classroom, in many ways teachers are also validating the value of technology, and even promoting the pursuit of technology as a viable and vibrant path.  At Why Science we advocate a very focused “hand on and minds on” learning experience and whenever there is such a great opportunity to bring active and “living” technologies into the classroom we believe there are also very strong learning opportunities.
