A Texas school is piloting a new Bring Your Own Technology program, allowing students to use devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablet computers in the classroom. Educators say that, so far, most students are using the devices appropriately for classroom work. “I feel that it creates an atmosphere of trust in the classroom,” teacher Shannon Whiteley said.

Why Science is thrilled about these developments. The atmosphere of trust created with the program will nurture the development of skills for critical evaluation of information.  Specifically, students will know and understand how to

  • locate information to answer questions
  • manage information effectively
  • critically evaluate information
  • synthesize information from multiple sources to answer questions and solve problems
